Dear Gail,
Tomorrow is our last glpr-scheduled media event: an hour-long live Public Broadcasting interview. I'm still recovering from the rest of our tour, but I've shed my sea legs enough to compose this note.
Gail, you put on a great show. And I'm a critical observer, a particular, organized, high-standard-type person. I can honestly say I have never worked with anyone more professional and competent than you. I would eagerly celebrate your participation on any project in my future.
I had this impression all on my own, even considering that Rex Appeal is my first book. However, I was not alone in this impression. Let me tell you a little story.
You know how an author gets to know the characteristics of a true media professional? Well, I was in the presence of more than one when I walked into Leonard Lopate's studio (WNYC-New York's NPR affiliate). We were greeted by an intelligent, informed, extremely prepared assistant, the person who had been assigned to our book. She launched into an exuberant discussion of its merits and debated subjects we had written about. She knew our project inside and out. And then she talked about you.
This woman processes thousands of topics, deals with hundreds of media representatives. She said the packet you sent was outstanding. That it made her job easier, that as thoroughly as she had prepared, your interview questions focused her attention on facts she had missed or underestimated. She said your preliminary work stood out in her experience — and allowed her to hand us off to a fully primed Mr. Lopate. She said she knows the characteristics of a superlative, professional, worthy publicist.
So do I.
Thanks for nearly 50 interviews and appearances spanning four months — that's roughly three per week. You got the word out, and for that I thank you. My best wishes, along with my fervent hope that we work together again.
Sincerely,
Kristin Donnan. co-author of Rex Appeal (Invisible Cities Press)
